About HPS

Mission & Goals

PRESERVING THE PAST, SHARING THE FUTURE

HPS is committed to preserving and sharing the unique spirits, authentic voices, and historical record of our esteemed elders via digital technologies, and making that treasury available to the Hawaiian people, hula practitioners, and students around the world.

Preserving the Past…

  • Honoring our hula elders through digital documentation of their life stories, training, experiences, and ‘ike
  • Caring for physical cultural treasures
  • Digitally preserving critical hula resources already in existence

…Sharing the Future

  • Supporting the vast hula community through continued development of online resources
  • Providing access for researchers, teachers, and students to HPS’s digital and physical collections
  • Educating the community through public programming
