Brief Biographical Summary:
Queenie Ventura Dowsett was born and raised on the island of O`ahu. Her mother was pure Hawaiian from Lä`ie, and her father was pure Portuguese from Kaua`i. Queenie first began her hula studies with her mother, the original lei-seller and founder of "Sophie's Lei Stand." She also studied under hula greats such as `Iolani Luahine, Mary Ho, Tom Hiona, Rose Joshua, Eleanor Hiram, and Joseph Kaha`ulėlio. She was the local lead actress in the 1951 feature film "Bird of Paradise" and enjoyed a long career as a featured hula dancer.
