Holokai performs a Hula Wahi Pana. | | | THIS PERFORMANCE CLIP IS PROVIDED FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY AND IS NOT INTENDED TO SERVE AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL FOR ONE TO LEARN THE DANCE. PROPER PROTOCOL REQUIRES YOU SPEAK TO THE KUMU TO REQUEST PERMISSION.
George Holokai
Honolulu, 1999
In this clip, Uncle George chants and dances a "Hula Wahi Pana" (dance for legendary/historic places) entitled "Ho`i Kealoha i Ni`ihau." He learned this as a "Hula Pahu" from his Kumu Tom Hiona, and he tries to imitate the drum beats while dancing so the viewer can get the idea of how the dance goes with the drum, as opposed to ipu.
Length: 2:45
Uncle George's chant words vary from those provided on the main webpage of this chant. Variations are noted below.
`Ae, Ho`i ke aloha i Ni`ihau
Ho`i ke aloha i Ni`ihau e
I ka wai huna o ka pä`o`o e
I ka ulu hua i ka häpapa e
I ke kö`eli e o Haläli`i e
Aia i Nihoa ma hope e
He moku häpapa i ke kai e
I ka ulu ... Oh, excuse me! (starts wrong verse)
NONA BEAMER: That's alright. That's alright.
(Uncle George continues dancing)
Eia i Nihoa ma hope e
He moku häpapa i ke kai e
O ka lä welawela i ke kula e
Huli aku ke alo i Kaua`i e
Ha`ina `ia mai ka puana e
Ke kuini Pi`olani he inoa
He inoa no Kapi`olani
NONA BEAMER: Maika`i, maika`i. George, you all right, dear. You all right. How old are you now?
GEORGE HOLOKAI: Seventy-one.
NONA BEAMER: Hey, darling, you baby. Wait til' you're seventy-eight. [LAUGHS]
